Aggregates Manager Honors GreyStone, Names Automated Log Washer A Top 25 Product

Aggregates Manager named GreyStone’s new Automated Log Washer as a Top 25 Rollout product for 2006 in its December issue.

Each year, the editors of Aggregates Manager award Top Rollout recognition to the products that “enrich the aggregates industry with innovation, productivity and/or greater supplier competition.”

This award recognizes the risk and reward of introducing new products to aggregates professionals, including the nearly 20,000 readers of Aggregates Manager. These readers include quarries, sand and gravel, crushed stone and other operations who appreciate that companies such as GreyStone make efforts to improve the efficiency and profitability of their businesses.

GreyStone’s High Frequency 4-ft x 8-ft Dewatering Screen was chosen as a Top 25 Rollout product in 2005.

According to the editors of Aggregates Manager, “Our staff reviews all the product introductions we’ve covered in the past year to pick out 25 that we believe are worth further review. Our priorities are new concept products . . . new series/new generation products in categories that relate to the aggregates industry, and other rollouts which serve our readers’ interests by increasing competition in a particular category.”

In working with customers around the United States, GreyStone realized that log washer operators had a tough challenge – finding a new way to keep the quality of aggregate consistent without having to make frequent and costly manual adjustments in the angle of inclination. The Automated Log Washer – developed and patented in conjunction with a leading U.S. Nebraska aggregate producer – increases efficiency, lowers labor costs and keeps the quality of aggregate consistent.

Working closely with a long-time customer, we came up with a solution: the Automated Log Washer has a hydraulic support system that is tied to a PLC sensor that detects the tonnage going through the unit. When the tonnage decreases, the system detects this and increases the angle of inclination until the sensor detects the proper tonnage. If tonnage increases, the hydraulic system automatically decreases the angle of inclination until the proper tonnage is detected. Upper and lower limit switches are employed to prevent excess inclination or damage to the unit.

Automating the variable incline section of the log washer with GreyStone’s new unit removes the need for human input beyond an initial calibration by the operator. The increase in efficiency and elimination of unnecessary labor costs solve the problem of inconsistent feed rate and uneven product quality – which in the past typically forced many operators to split the difference between clean material and lowered tonnage output.
